On Monday, April 8, 2024, the Great North American Eclipse will occur. The path of totality in the United States begins in Texas and ends in Maine. It is listed as one of the longest total solar eclipses of the 21st century.
The eclipse will be partially visible to almost all of the contiguous United States. The estimated times for the partial eclipse in Donalsonville, Georgia, are 1:40 through 4:20 p.m., with the maximum around 3:00. At maximum, around 80 percent of the sun will be covered by the moon.
Seminole County Schools will plan for a regular school day on April 8, 2024. Teachers and staff will make every effort to keep students indoors during the afternoon to limit opportunities for students to look directly at the eclipse. Parents should talk with their students about the dangers of looking directly at the eclipse. If you have any questions, please call SCMHS at 229-524-5135.
Safety precautions concerning the solar eclipse:
DO NOT LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE SUN WITH YOUR BARE EYES.
Students may sometimes ignore warnings and try to look at the eclipse.
All younger students/children should be supervised during the event.
Only certified Eclipse Glasses should be utilized to view the eclipse. Using do-it-yourself eclipse glasses or other alternatives may cause permanent injury to the eyes.
