Seminole County Middle School Reading Team Finishes Strong in Regional Reading Bowl Competition

On Saturday, Feb. 20th, 7 Seminole County Middle School students competed in the Southern Regional Reading Bowl Competition. The southern region consists of over 61 school districts stretching from Seminole County to Savannah-Chatham.

Event coordinator, Cristina Dover said Saturday at the conclusion of the virtual competition, “I am so proud of your team. Competing for the first time and in a pandemic/virtual bowl. That was nothing short of amazing.  You guys did well!”

The Georgia Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl (HRRB) is open to students in grades 4-12 across the state. Elementary and middle school students read and are quizzed on the 20 Georgia Book Award Nominees, while high school students read and are quizzed on the 20 Georgia Peach Teen Book Award Nominees.

The SCMS Reading Bowl Team members who competed Saturday are Kendall Denham, Kynia Blake, Hope Humpries, Courtney Cannon, Hanna West, Jamora Henry and Wyatt Blackburn. Middle school teachers Stacey Riley, Julia Rutledge and Kim Humphries assisted sponsor Kelly Earnest during the event. Mrs. Earnest is excited about next year's team and hopes to have enough participation to compete in the middle school and high school competitions.
